Follow the team’s prep: Road To Rio: Team USA Practices
Team USA is officially journeying to Rio, beginning with the team’s first practice. Headlined by MVP candidates Tina Charles and Maya Moore, future Hall of Famers Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, and Tamika Catchings, and rookie sensation Breanna Stewart, Team USA is seeking a sixth-straight Gold Medal, and eighth since 1984. They’re led by UConn head coach and 11-time NCAA national champion, Geno Auriemma, who led Team USA to Gold in 2012 by an average of 34.4 points.
In 2012, Team USA led all countries in scoring, field-goal percentage, defensive field-goal percentage, rebounding, defensive rebounding, rebounding margin, blocks, assists, steals and assists-to-turnover ratio. With the 2016 Summer Games officially here, take a look into the sights, sounds and images of Team USA’s Road To Rio:
Speaking of international basketball:
Liz Cambage says she’s grown from turbulent 12 months and would love to bring home Olympic gold
ELIZABETH Cambage has travelled so far in such a short space of time even she can joke about the turbulent past.
This week Opals basketballer Cambage jetted out of Australia exactly a year on from her greatest controversy. Cambage was dropped for the Rio qualifiers by coach Brendan Joyce after attending the Splendour in the Grass rock concert rather than an Opals team camp.
She joked this week that she wasn’t even tempted to jump flights to head to Byron Bay, instead soaring across the ocean to a Dallas training camp.
Soaring is an appropriate metaphor, according to Joyce.
He has become Cambage’s mentor and confidante and believes she has never been mentally or physically stronger.
Nurse, Canadian women’s basketball team look to keep momentum going
“Obviously we were really fortunate to have those two tournaments last year on home soil,” Nurse told Olympic.ca. “We performed extremely well and we were able to show everybody in Canada what women’s basketball was all about. Since then, the support that we’ve gotten from people has been tremendous and I couldn’t be more thankful for it.”
Whalen, Lynx are ready for Olympic play
Lindsay Whalen is honored and excited to be chosen to the U.S. women’s basketball team for a second-straight Olympic games.
But the Minnesota Lynx star and former University of Minnesota standout is approaching next month’s competition in Rio de Janeiro as a business trip, as well.
Guess this is why the USA Basketball teams will be on a boat:
Statement for Australian Team Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller
TEAM: Due to a variety of problems in the Village, including gas, electricity and plumbing I have decided that no Australian Team member will move into our allocated building (B23).
I will reassess the situation this evening.
For over a week now AOC staff have been working long hours to get our section of the Village ready for our athletes.
Problems include blocked toilets, leaking pipes, exposed wiring, darkened stairwells where no lighting has been installed and dirty floors in need of a massive clean.
John Altavilla at the Hartford Courant: As WNBA Takes Hiatus For Olympics, Let’s Look Back (And Forward)
The rise in social activism and of two great teams has characterized the course of this WNBA season as it reaches its monthlong Olympics break.
Here’s a look at some highlights as the league prepares to take its nap.
Taking a stand: Players from the league decided to have their voices heard after the outbreak of shootings by and of police around the nation.
But while the league may have supported the rights of the players to speak out, it did not like the decision of some to wear warmup shirts with slogans, deeming them in violation of the league uniform policy that prohibits the altering of uniforms.
Hansen: WNBA right on pace with NBA through 20 years
“The WNBA doesn’t even compare to how popular the NBA is.”
Right now, that may seem true, imaginary person.
But I am here to tell you why you are wrong when saying that.
The National Basketball Association, which was established in 1946, just concluded its 70th season as a league. Meanwhile, the Women’s National Basketball Association, which was established in 1996, is celebrating its 20th year as a league.
When a league that has 30 teams, almost 450 players and has been around almost four times longer than a league with 12 teams and almost 150 players, you will see further advancement.
The TrifectaPodcast:
- Swin Cash joins the ladies and addresses the WNBA players wearing “Black Lives Matter” shirts, who were then fined by the league for not adhering to the dress code.

Poem, What we are made of — an ode to women’s basketball
We are made of follow through. Fade away jump shots. Hail Mary buzzer beaters. Double rims. Metal backboards. Pick-up games with grown men on Sundays. Made of tomboy in our blood. Asphalt covered hands. Of, No dresses, please Mom. Just shorts. Baggy. Loose enough to crossover a boy. Made of sports bras. Street slang. Chewed gum. Of ladylike lookin’ like cornrows. Of cornrows. Shaved heads. Side pony tails. Hair weaves. New perms. We stay ready to play.
Made of worthy. Grit. Grind. Pat Summitt mentality. Cheryl Miller work ethic. Of everyone saying No to little girls, with big dreams, and Nike headbands, who are picked last at recess. Of recess rebounds. Desk sweat in study halls. First one to take the shot. Last one to leave the gym. Made of, play me. I dare you. Bet you 20 I’ll win. Bet you by senior year I’ll dunk. Of, lost bets. Ankle weights. Jump to the rim until the moon gets closer. No failure. Just hustle.
