In December, Andrews, 73, surpassed the previous national mark of 1,333 victories set by Robert Hughes, the retired boys’ coach at Dunbar High in Fort Worth, 30 miles to the northeast. This Granbury team is far from her best at 18-16. But Andrews’s on-court demeanor is no less intense, no less driven. She is a coach, not anyone’s buddy.

“You’re running the floor like you’ve got weights on your legs,” she barked at her players Monday, making them complete two extra sets of wind sprints. When a player talked back, Andrews said, “Zip it up,” and sent her jogging on the sideline.

Leta Andrews is on the brink of becoming prep basketball’s all-time win leader – Granbury (Texas) girls basketball coach needs 5 wins to surpass record for either gender.

During the 2005-06 season, she set the girls’ record when she reached victory No. 1,218. That night she was presented a crystal plate by Robert Hughes of Dunbar (Fort Worth, Texas), who holds the national boys record with 1,333 victories.

She thanked him, then quickly added, “Coach Hughes, now I’m going to start chasing you.”
