The National Collegiate Athletic Association and the City of Indianapolis announced today that they had reached an agreement “to extend the historic partnership” they forged when the NCAA agreed to move to Indianapolis almost 20 years ago. The new agreement was announced at a joint press conference at Bankers Life Field House in Indianapolis.
The key element of the agreement, according to NCAA President Mark Emmert, is that the NCAA will establish Indianapolis as the permanent site of the Division I Women’s Basketball Championship, starting as soon as 2018. “We think this is a win-win for everyone involved,” Emmert said. “Our hope is that Indianapolis will be to women’s basketball what Omaha has become for college baseball. We’ll also save money because our staff won’t have to travel for the event and, equally important, Indianapolis is very enthusiastic about the Women’s Final Four.”
